We have designed practices that ensure that coaching impacts both teacher and student learning. We recently analyzed hundreds of samples of the Results-Based Coaching Tool to determine how student learning changed as a result of a 6-9 week coaching cycle. We discovered that the baseline data indicated that, on average, students were at 28% proficiency at the beginning of the coaching cycle. At the end of the coaching cycle, the same students reached an average proficiency of 68%. Check out the graph below, as well as the tool that the coaches used to collect data.

"As a new school, before opening our doors to students for the first time, we were looking for resources that would help us embed effective coaching structures into our program from day one. Student-Centered Coaching: A Guide for K-8 Coaches and Principals provided us with both frameworks to discuss/consider and materials to assist with implementation. This book has been an invaluable resource to move us forward with a different vision of what coaching can be, and the impact it can have for individual students."

"Diane Sweeney's book "Student-Centered Coaching" has arrived just in time for many districts across the country who are frustrated with lackluster results from the instructional coaching movement. She argues that for too long we've focused coaching efforts on teachers' practices and hoped to see results in student achievement rather than focusing on students from the get-go. She includes ways to make classroom visits more student-centered, specific data management tools and protocols for analyzing data, and a "results-based coaching tool" for coaches to measure their effectiveness with student progress. This book is a must for anyone who's a coach or principal."

“Diane has taken a commitment to instructional
leadership and turned it into practical models and applications.
She has a thorough grounding in the research, which she combines
with extensive personal experience and a brass-tacks orientation
toward helping teachers and administrators improve. Diane’s
approach to leadership development is intellectually rigorous
but also down to earth. You will gain from Diane both a deeper
understanding and real tools for leadership and facilitation.
She’s a delight to work with—a good listener, thoughtful,
responsive, and reliable.”

“The impact of this partnership has been
immeasurable. We now have a cadre of experienced teacher leaders
and principals who understand not only how to implement best practices
in literacy, but also are taking the step to influence their colleagues
to implement these practices as well.”
